Five Workers Hospitalised After Toxic Package Leaks at Post Offices

Five mail workers were hospitalised today after a parcel containing an illicit substance began leaking at two Queensland mail centres. Emergency responders raced to both facilities this morning after workers complained of odd odours and felt sick.

The leak began at about 6.40 am at a mail sorting facility in Townsville. Staff realised something was amiss with one of the parcels they were sorting through. Firefighters responded quickly and discovered a leaking parcel that was emitting toxic fumes. They shut off the area to ensure everyone’s safety.

A Townsville staff member was taken to the hospital as a precaution. They were monitored by doctors, though, and were stable the entire time. All five workers taken into the hospital have since been discharged.

Tainted Packages Spread Disease to Second Facility

The leaking package had already touched other parcels before anyone noticed the problem. Some of those contaminated packages were loaded onto trucks and sent to a post office in Charters Towers earlier this morning. That’s when things got worse.

Four additional workers at the Charters Towers facility began to get ill from inhaling the chemicals. They reported to the local hospital with minimal symptoms. Firefighters in protective clothing had to rush to this second facility to deal with the situation.

Special hazmat-clad firefighters cleaned out both scenes. They took great care in sealing the toxic packages and checking the air to ensure its safety for inhalation. Police officers likewise arrived at both sites to assist in controlling the crisis and finding out what occurred.

Australia Post Warns Against Sending Banned Items

The material contained within the package cannot be mailed. Australia Post strictly regulates what individuals can and cannot send through the mail, yet one person did exactly that. The company is now reminding individuals of these safety guidelines. “The safety of our employees is of top concern,” a company spokesman said today. “Australia Post has very good, well-established safety procedures in place with respect to such incidents. We stand with our employees.”

The Townsville mail sorting centre is now operating at full capacity. Workers there have resumed normal package processing activities. The Charters Towers post office, however, remains closed. It will remain closed until safety experts provide an all-clear that it’s fully safe for employees and patrons.

Australia Post is requesting customers to be very mindful of what they mail. Hazardous chemicals, gasoline, and other harmful substances are off-limits. Mailing these types of items can harm postal employees and can have severe repercussions. The company claims it will continue supporting the employees who were hurt by today’s event and will work with authorities to determine who mailed the harmful package.
