Synopsis

British actress Emaa Hussen has been charged following an Australian investigation into an alleged 320-kilogram methamphetamine shipment concealed within charcoal bags from Ghana. Authorities estimate the drugs were worth A$296 million, with the case highlighting ongoing efforts to disrupt international trafficking networks targeting Australia.

British actress Emaa Hussen in connection with an alleged attempt to smuggle 320 kilograms of methamphetamine into Sydney, hidden in a shipment of charcoal from Ghana. Australian Federal Police claim the drugs were found upon the consignment’s arrival at the nation’s largest freight hub, Port Botany.

They value the seized meth at A$296 million (about $194 million US), capable of yielding millions of individual street sales had it hit the illicit market. The consignment was tracked down by Australian Border Force officers after being intercepted.

While conducting cargo inspections, they discovered that methamphetamine was secreted within bags of charcoal, authorities allege. This was removed before the border agency “continued to monitor the shipment as part of a broader investigation.”

Later, according to investigators, Hussen, who is believed to have lived in Australia previously, visited a western Sydney storage facility where the container was being unloaded. The Australian Federal Police claim some of the consignment was then delivered to a Blacktown property, which became central to the investigation.

Police allege that during searches, “bags relating to the shipment, electronic devices and written materials” were seized from the property. Hussen has been charged with attempting to possess a commercial quantity of a border-controlled drug, an offense that carries a maximum penalty of life imprisonment.

No plea was entered and Hussen is expected to appear in court again on the matter. Two men from South Australia were previously arrested in relation to the same investigation, and are alleged to have sought to arrange storage for parts of the shipment using false identities.

Methamphetamine is the focus of continued Australian anti-drug law enforcement efforts to curb international trafficking into the country.

According to the latest report by Australian Criminal Intelligence Commission, some 26.8 tonnes of illegal drugs (including cocaine, meth, heroin, and MDMA) will be consumed in Australia between August 2024 and August 2025, the highest total since the National Wastewater Drug Monitoring Program began.

Methamphetamine is now among the most prevalent illicit drugs discovered both regionally and metropolitanly across the nation. UN reports record levels of meth seizures across East and Southeast Asia, demonstrating massive trade volumes across the Asia-Pacific region, although officials said there is no suspected link between the Sydney case and international operations.
