Australia

Chinese Premier Li Qiang had a meeting with Australian PM Anthony Albanese at a large gathering in Malaysia where many Southeast Asian leaders convened. Li stated that China is willing to make the alliance firmer and more stable. The discussion came merely days after both nations had engaged in a sa disputeover their planes flying too close to one another.

Aircraft Incident

Australia last week claimed a Chinese fighter aircraft came close to one of its surveillance planes and released flares. China responded by claiming Australia instead intruded into their airspace without permission and was now attempting to cover that up. This was not even the first instance of such an occurrence. Earlier this month, Australia became angry when another Chinese fighter aircraft released flares just 30 meters away from an Australian aircraft over the South China Sea. Australia complained that it was risky and the Chinese pilot had done a poor job.

Issues Over Island

Aside from the plane incidents, China and Australia are also fighting over who becomes more close to tiny Pacific Island nations. China has been befriending these little nations by doing business deals and being friendly diplomatically. In 2022, Beijing convinced Solomon Islands to sign a security agreement. The following year China signed another agreement with them regarding police matters.

Australia didn’t remain silent. Australia made its own agreement this month with Papua New Guinea whereby Australia is able to make use of their military locations. Observers of all this say Australia did it to counter China having too much control around the Pacific.

Trade Continues Between Two Countries

Despite the plane scares and island rivalry, both nations continue to buy and sell goods from each other. The money aspect remains relatively okay. China and Australia both continue to say they desire free trade and words rather than war.

Li explained to Albanese that China is eager to cooperate on green technology, high tech industry and computer-related things. Albanese traveled to China in July attempting to repair the relationship that became seriously strained under the previous Australian administration. Both sides need to continue talking and try to assist each other but being careful not to get things wrong, he explained. Li indicated the situation between Australia and China is favorable at the moment.
