Thailand and Cambodia Agree to Negotiate

Thailand and Cambodia have agreed to talk after four days of intense fighting on their border. At least 33 have died. Over 168,000 villagers have fled and now reside in refugee shelters.

The fighting began along the border near the ancient Prasat Ta Muen Thom temple, which both nations lay claim to. The temple sits in the mountains dividing Thailand’s Surin province from Cambodia’s Oddar Meanchey province.

U.S. President Donald Trump addressed both sides. He threatened that the United States may halt trade agreements with both nations if the shooting does not cease. Both nations, following the appeals, stated that they would initiate Thailand Cambodia ceasefire negotiations.

Why Are Thailand and Cambodia Fighting?

The border issue has existed for decades. Both Cambodia and Thailand claim the temple as theirs. The clashes erupted on July 24, 2025. Thailand reported that Cambodian troops approached a Thai base and fired. Cambodia reported its soldiers fired only after Thailand fired first.

Rockets were soon launched from Cambodia, and Thailand retaliated with air strikes. This is the most severe fighting between the two countries in over a decade.

Cambodia Complies with Ceasefire

On the evening of July 26, Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Manet addressed President Trump. He also issued an online message stating that Cambodia embraces an “immediate and unconditional ceasefire.” Hun Manet declared he wishes to stop the bloodshed and allow people to go home. He requested his deputy prime minister to liaise with American and Thai officials to bring about the ceasefire.

Thailand’s Acting Prime Minister Phumtham Wechayachai also spoke with Trump. He said Thailand is ready to talk about a Thailand-Cambodia border ceasefire but wants strong safety guarantees. He said 15 Thai civilians have died, and 50 have been hurt. More than 130,000 people in Thailand have had to leave their homes.

Phumtham stated that Thailand wants face-to-face negotiations between the two nations and requested Cambodia to demonstrate seriousness about ending the fighting. Despite the appeals, minor skirmishes were reported along the border. Further meetings are scheduled in the coming days to attempt to restore peace to the region.
