The Trump administration has announced sweeping new tariffs on imported drones and drone components, saying the United States must reduce its reliance on foreign-made unmanned aircraft systems and strengthen domestic manufacturing.
President Donald Trump signed a proclamation imposing tariffs of up to 100% on certain drones considered sensitive to national security while smaller drones will face a 25% duty.
The measures also introduce country-specific tariffs on imports from several U.S. allies, including the European Union, Japan, South Korea and the United Kingdom.
According to the White House, the tariffs will begin taking effect in 21 days with some components subject to a longer implementation timeline. The move marks another step in Trump's broader trade strategy which has increasingly linked tariffs to national security and industrial policy.
Tariffs Vary by Drone Type and Country
Under the new policy, drones with capabilities deemed critical to national security will face a 100% ad valorem tariff while smaller drones will be subject to a 25% tariff.
The White House also announced a 15% tariff on drones and components imported from the European Union, Japan, Liechtenstein, South Korea, Switzerland and Taiwan. Imports from the United Kingdom will face a 10% tariff.
Most tariffs will come into effect 21 days after the proclamation was signed. However, tariffs on certain non-sensitive drone components and products receiving specific exemptions will take effect 180 days later.
US Cites Security Risks and Supply Chain Dependence
The decision follows an investigation by Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick who concluded that the U.S. remains heavily dependent on foreign suppliers for drones and critical components.
According to the White House, the investigation found that some imported drone technologies pose potential security and safety risks. The White House is also worried as its domestic production capacity remains insufficient to meet national security requirements.
The drone industry has grown rapidly in recent years, driven by demand across defence, logistics, agriculture and infrastructure inspection. Industry estimates project the global drone market to exceed US$90 billion by 2030 which highlights the strategic importance of the sector.
The latest tariffs reinforce the Trump administration's use of trade measures to encourage domestic manufacturing while addressing supply chain and national security concerns.
