SAP CFO Says AI Must Move Beyond Chatbots

SAP Chief Financial Officer Dominik Asam said the industry is still in the early stages of AI in enterprise software, saying it must go beyond chatbots and coding assistants to then start generating broader company returns with such complex business processes.
Adding to SAP’s second quarter results, Asam said that most of AI token use today goes toward coding assistants and chatbots, where errors have low potential ramifications.
Core Business Processes Require More Reliability
Asam added that using AI for core business processes like finance, supply chain or human resources is more difficult because errors may compound over multiple steps and lead to risk of compliance. It needs far excruciating levels of assurance, he said.
Clean Data Are More Important Than Powerful Models
He said the next phase of enterprise AI relies on companies making their data usable and governed properly, as opposed to relying on general-purpose artificial intelligence models.
Businesses will use the cheapest reliable tool that can safely deliver whatever performance and outcome is required, traditional software, an open-source model or a frontier AI model, he wrote.
