Gamgee Turns Dog Cancer Experiment into AI-Driven mRNA Vaccine Startup

Synopsis

Gamgee is turning one dog’s remarkable cancer response into a clinical effort to test whether AI-designed personalised mRNA vaccines can work across more dogs.

When Sydney-based tech entrepreneur Paul Conyngham ran out of conventional options for his dog Rosie, he turned to an unlikely combination of AI, genomics and mRNA technology.

The experiment has now become Gamgee, a startup developing personalised cancer vaccines for dogs.

Rosie was diagnosed with mast cell cancer in 2024. After surgery, chemotherapy and immunotherapy failed, Conyngham used AI and genomic analysis to identify mutations in her tumour and worked with researchers at UNSW to develop a personalised mRNA vaccine.

After treatment, several tumours shrank significantly.

Gamgee says the treatment extended Rosie's life, although the results came from a single case and do not yet prove the approach works broadly.

The startup has now joined Y Combinator's Summer 2026 batch and is running a clinical trial in Australia.

From ChatGPT Experiment to Personalised Cancer Treatment

The process starts with sequencing DNA from a dog's tumour and a healthy blood sample. Gamgee's system then identifies mutations unique to the cancer and ranks potential targets that could trigger an immune response. Those targets are used to design an mRNA vaccine for that individual dog.

The mRNA instructs cells to briefly produce cancer-specific markers, helping the immune system recognise and attack tumour cells.

Gamgee is working with researchers and clinical partners including UNSW, the University of Queensland and the Garvan Institute.

The company says its first case involved a fully computationally designed mRNA cancer vaccine delivered to a dog. It is now trying to turn that one-off process into a repeatable clinical system.

One Dog is Not Enough to Prove the Science

The biggest challenge for Gamgee is evidence.

Rosie's response is encouraging but one case cannot establish whether personalised vaccines are safe or effective across different dogs and cancers. Gamgee itself says its next step is a clinician-led trial involving 30 dogs, designed to assess safety, immune response and clinical outcomes.

The company is currently recruiting dogs with mast cell cancer in Australia while accepting applications from owners globally. Its approach is also attracting attention from the wider technology and biotech communities.

Gamgee's story highlights a bigger shift in medicine where AI is increasingly being used to analyse complex biological data and design treatments around individual patients. Whether that can move from one remarkable dog to a reliable cancer treatment remains to be tested.
