The Coalition has announced a plan to build several nuclear power plants across Australia. However, Dutton’s plan to shift away from renewable energy could cause an energy shortage in Australia. The Coalition’s pledge involves building nuclear reactors at seven sites around the country. These reactors would be taxpayer-funded. Dutton’s plan proposes utilizing Australia’s ageing coal fleet while the reactors are being built. However, this model is based off the assumption that these plants could generate between 72% and 81% of their capacity. (Ambien online)

Ageing Coal Plants Could Cause Energy Shortage

The Institute for Energy Economics and Financial Analysis (IEEFA) made estimations of the coal fleet’s capabilities for the time period between 2034 and 2043. The estimate showed a shortfall of 9,300 gigawatt-hours a year. According to an analyst from the IEEFA, a failure to properly account for the capabilities of these aging coal plants could lead to a risk of an energy shortage. Tristan Edis, analyst at Green Energy Markets, said: “Over the 2030s, the existing coal-fired power stations will be close to, or have exceeded, the age at which past coal plants typically retired. “We should be planning for the likelihood that they will suffer a similar deterioration in their availability.” Furthermore, Edis said a reliance on gas would also have consequences for the consumers in terms of the price of gas. The Coalition has also criticised Labor’s approach to renewables. The party released a statement saying Labor was “forcing the premature closure of coal generation – well before their notified closure dates”. “Proper maintenance can ensure coal plants are not closed prematurely. The Coalition’s approach, based on comprehensive and evidence-backed modelling, ensures that coal continues to play a crucial role in Australia’s energy mix, both now and in the future.” Frontier emphasised the importance of maintaining coal plants in this transition period would be key to avoiding an energy shortage.
