Breaking News - President Donald Trump has issued a deadline to Russian President Vladimir Putin to negotiate a peace deal in Ukraine, threatening “very severe tariffs” if no agreement is reached. The warning, which was made during a high-level meeting with NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte at the White House on July 14, marks Trump's most direct ultimatum to Russia to end the ongoing war.
Trade Tariffs As a Pressure Tactic
Trump expressed increasing frustration with Russia’s continued military operations and Ukraine and warned that he would use secondary trade, potentially at100% rate, to penalise Moscow if peace talks do not reach a proper agreement. “I use straight for a lot of things, but it’s great for settling wars,” he said during the Oval Office discussion.
According to multiple sources, Trump has made it very clear that this economic threat is intended to push both Moscow and Kyiv towards a negotiated ceasefire. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has already proposed extending martial law in mobilisation through November 5 as current measures expire on August 6. The 15-day window creates high pressure on all parties involved.
Pattern of Deadlines and Frustration
This is not Trump’s first warning. In 2025, he gave Russia a two-week deadline to show good faith towards peace negotiations, warning of alternative consequences if Putin continues military aggression. In January, Trump’s special envoy Steve Witkoff had also warned that the US would step back from involvement in the conflict if the direct Russia-Ukraine talks didn’t begin.
Trump’s tone has completely shifted from offering himself as a mediator for peace talks to criticising Putin. A July 3 call with Putin, where no progress was made, led to this ultimate.
New NATO Deal Shifts U.S. Role in Ukraine
At the same time, at the White House meeting, Trump unveiled a NATO agreement, where European allies would fund and transfer US-made weapons to Ukraine. “We’re sending weapons to NATO and NATO is paying for those weapons,” he told reporters. This includes patriot air defence systems, which are very important for Ukraine as the mission draws attacks intensify. Germany and Norway are already contributing to this deal, and the arrangement allows Trump to reduce the direct U.S. spending while shifting more responsibility onto Europe.
