Synopsis

Amazon MGM Studios is building AI tools to help speed up film and television production and manage rising costs. The company has launched a dedicated AI studio and plans to begin testing the tools with selected filmmakers in March 2026. Amazon says the goal is to improve efficiency while supporting creative professionals, not replacing them. The move reflects growing interest in using AI to streamline production workflows as streaming platforms expand content output and face increasing financial and operational pressures.

Amazon is building artificial intelligence software to assist in creating films and movies more quickly and efficiently, confirmed the company in February 2026, Amazon MGM Studios. The initiative involves a special AI studio and collaboration with filmmakers to test the tools.

The development was first reported by Reuters.

Amazon MGM Studios has established a dedicated internal division that deals with the development of AI-based film and television creation. It is headed by Albert Cheng, Vice President Amazon MGM Studios and it has engineers, researchers and creative professionals.

The unit is a specialized innovation division that collaborates with creators to create tools that can aid various production processes, minor to those of planning and execution.

Alliances Established to Experiment with the Practical Application

Amazon is collaborating with a number of industry professionals in order to test these tools in a real environment. These are filmmaker Robert Stromberg via Secret City, actor producer Kunal Nayyar via Good Karma Productions and animator Colin Brady who have worked previously with Pixar and Industrial Light and Magic.

The beta testing will be commenced in March 2026. Amazon will take the responses of these partners to hone and develop the technology.

Chapter two

Cutting Down Production Expenses and Time

Amazon claimed that the second reason why it is taking this initiative is the increased cost of production. The escalating costs have made studios less efficient in creating content and undertaking new creative assignments.

The company is confident that AI tools can assist in optimizing the workflows and making them more efficient, but leaving creative decision-making to the human hands.

There is an increase in content being created on the streaming platforms but increased cost and periods of production are still a significant challenge. The tools that contribute to the optimization of any workflow might enable the studios to organize budgets more effectively and deliver projects within shorter time frames.

The action of Amazon can be seen as a part of a larger trend that can be found all over the entertainment sector, with businesses looking to use AI to enhance their production.

The application of AI in filmmaking has caused the fear of its effect on employment. Amazon has stated that it aims at benefitting writers, directors and production teams and not to replace them.

The company argues that creative personalities will still hold the key position in the storytelling and content generation.

It is expensive to produce, and indeed, it is difficult to produce more, and it is difficult to take a lot of risk, said Albert Cheng, Vice President at Amazon MGM Studios.

He stated that AI will allow making things more efficient without losing the creative efforts of artists and filmmakers.

Amazon has been broadening its Artificial intelligence in several business sectors, such as cloud computing, retail and media. This broader strategy includes the creation of AI in the production of films and television.

In 2022, the company helped improve its entertainment business by acquiring MGM and offering more content and production to Prime Video.

Chapter three

Beta testing to inform later implementation

Amazon will also start testing its AI tools on a limited group of film-makers and production partners in March 2026. The findings will assist in refining the tools as well as dictating how they could be applied in further productions.

The project would have an impact on the way Amazon would manage film and television production as it would be expanding its content business.
