Synopsis

The iPhone maker has trained a China-specific large language model with Alibaba's support, seeking greater control over AI features on devices sold in a market where OpenAI and Anthropic models are unavailable.

Apple China AI model development has seen progress with Apple working to develop a large language model for China and backed by Alibaba. This is set to change Apple’s reliance on third-party Chinese AI models for its endogenous services.

Having secured regulatory approval last month, Apple is set to introduce Apple Intelligence in China after registering its generative AI service with the Cyberspace Administration of China, a prerequisite for its localization on devices.

Chapter one

Apple adapts AI strategy for China

Apple China AI model development is taking place concurrently with the introduction of Alibaba’s Qwen model, which will be integrated into Apple Intelligence on iPhones, iPads, and Macs, as well as Vision Pro, in China.

The approach reflects China’s differing AI ecosystem, where services such as OpenAI’s ChatGPT and Anthropic’s Claude are inaccessible. In 2025, Apple announced its intention to partner with Alibaba, in addition to other Chinese technology companies, following similar measures taken by a number of domestic firms.

The China-specific version of Apple Intelligence will also incorporate Baidu technologies. Apple quietly published a Chinese-language document last week, outlining the technical implementation of the tie-up between Siri, Writing Tools, and Alibaba’s Qwen, before deleting it.

Chapter two

China market remains important to Apple

Apple China AI development builds upon the company’s broader ambitions in the region, where it has seen rising sales and investments. The Apple China AI development builds upon the company’s commitment to the region, where it has seen rising sales and investments.

Apple had recorded revenues of $111.2 billion in its fiscal second quarter that ended on March 28, 2026, an increase of 17% compared with the same quarter of its 2025 fiscal year. Greater China revenue amounted to $21.5 billion for the fiscal year, according to the latest quarterly report.

Apple reported its results for the fiscal 3Q on July 30. The company’s website highlighted the release as one of several key announcements.

Apple’s strategy also takes advantage of the rising demand for AI in China. As of December 2025, China is home to 602 million people who have used generative AI at least once, representing 42.8 percent of the population, according to the China Internet Network Information Center.

Apple China AI model therefore fits into a broader trend of a domestic market in which large language models enjoy strong popularity and in which Apple is seeking to adapt its technology and strategy.
