Tensions between Thailand and Cambodia have reached alarming levels, with Thailand’s Prime Minister Phumtham Wechayachai warning that the deadly clashes along their shared border could move towards war. The ongoing dispute, which has been centered near the Ubon Ratchathani and Surin provinces, has already claimed at least 16 lives and displaced over a hundred thousand people on both sides.

The violence came from a long-standing territorial disagreement that dates back more than a century, and while world leaders push for de-escalation, the fighting continues. Both countries have blamed each other for initiating recent attacks, with Thailand alleging Cambodia used drones for surveillance and Cambodia accusing troops of advancing on a disputed temple site.

Chapter one

Heavy Casualties and Civilian Displacement

Since fighting began on Thursday, 14 civilians and one Thai soldier have been reported dead, while Cambodia has confirmed the death of one civilian. Dozens of people have been wounded, and entire communities have been relocated to different places. In Thailand, evacuees, including many children and elderly people, have taken shelter in sports complexes and have been turned into emergency camps.

Those displaced describe scenes of chaos and fear, particularly from heavy firing. Some elderly evacuees said that the violence was worse than anything since the Cambodian civil war in the 1980s.

Chapter two

Global Community Calls for Ceasefire and Dialogue

The International community has responded swiftly, urging both countries to pull back from the border. Malaysia's Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim, chair of ASEAN, has appealed for an immediate ceasefire inside. However, fighting has continued despite diplomatic efforts to stop it.

The United States, China, France and the European Union, and even Australia have all expressed deep concern and called for restraint. The United Nations Security Council is expected to meet on Friday to discuss the crisis after the Cambodian Prime Minister, Hun Manet, appealed for intervention, accusing Thailand of aggression.

The current violence shows unresolved historic tensions, and with thousands of people displaced and diplomacy under strain, observers fear that without immediate international mediation, the situation could worsen.
