Microsoft on Tuesday announced that it would invest $17.5 billion in India during 2026-2029. The money will be used in furthering India's cloud and artificial intelligence infrastructure, training programs, and general operations. This is in addition to the $3 billion the company announced for India in January this year.
Building Infrastructure in Hyderabad
This investment will be used to build a secure infrastructure that will enable the adoption of AI in the country. At the heart of this effort is the great progress being made at the India South Central cloud region based in Hyderabad. This region is set to go live in mid-2026. This will be our largest hyperscale region in India, comprising three availability zones, Microsoft said. The company added that this size is roughly two Eden Gardens stadiums combined.
The $17.5 billion investment from Microsoft comes close on the heels of the $15 billion investment announced by Google. In October, Google said it would invest $15 billion between 2026 and 2030 to set up an AI hub and a gigawatt-scale data centre in Visakhapatnam. Google said this investment would be its largest in India so far. The money would go to the AI hub that would house a purpose-built data centre campus to help meet the rising demand for digital services across India and the globe.
Meeting with Prime Minister Modi
Microsoft's announcement Tuesday came shortly after Microsoft Chairman and CEO Satya Nadella met Prime Minister Narendra Modi to discuss the nation's AI road map and growth priorities. Microsoft will undertake investment in India with three focus areas-scale, skills and sovereignty aligned to the Prime Minister's vision of creating an inclusive ecosystem that promotes AI innovation and access at scale, the company said in a blog post following the meeting.
Speaking about the announcement, Prime Minister Narendra Modi said that when it came to AI, the world was optimistic about India. Delighted to see India be the place where Microsoft is going to make its largest-ever investment in Asia. The youth of India will harness this opportunity to innovate and leverage the power of AI for a better planet, Modi posted on X.
He said the investment would build the fundamental infrastructure, capabilities and skills needed for an AI-first India. The CEO of Microsoft will also be on a four-day visit starting this Tuesday. In the next three days, he is scheduled to address gatherings in New Delhi, Bengaluru and Mumbai.
Government Support
Later on Tuesday evening, Nadella met Union Electronics and Information Technology Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw. On the meeting and Microsoft's investment, Vaishnaw said India remained committed to innovation anchored in trust and sovereignty. Microsoft's landmark investment signals India's rise as a reliable technology partner for the world. This partnership will set new benchmarks and drive the country's leap from digital public infrastructure to AI public infrastructure, he said.
Microsoft India and South Asia President Puneet Chandok said the company was committed to further expanding access to skills and tools, so every Indian, be it in boardrooms to classrooms, finance to farmers, and commerce to communities, can meaningfully participate in an AI-enabled economy.
Helping informal workers
The company currently employs more than 22,000 people in India across Bengaluru, Hyderabad, Pune, Gurugram, Noida, and other cities. Microsoft also announced that it would integrate advanced AI capabilities into the e-Shram and National Career Service portals of the Ministry of Labour and Employment to extend the benefits of AI to more than 310 million informal workers.
Built on Microsoft Azure's secure and scalable cloud infrastructure, e-Shram connects workers with as many as 18 welfare schemes. It has helped to expand India's social protection coverage from 24 per cent in 2019 to 64 per cent in 2025, Microsoft said.
India is fast turning into a strategic market for global tech giants. It has a huge young population that is increasingly transitioning onto digital services. The government has been pushing for the adoption of more technology in all sectors. Investments like the one made by Microsoft and Google show confidence in India's growth potential as well as its ability to become a major hub for AI and cloud computing.
