US Orders 500,000 Citizens of Four Countries to Leave America

The US government has told over 500,000 immigrants from four countries that they must leave America right away. People from Cuba, Haiti, Nicaragua, and Venezuela who were allowed to stay temporarily will get emails telling them to go home.

The Department of Homeland Security made this announcement on Thursday. These immigrants had been given special protection under former President Joe Biden, but President Trump has now canceled that program.

Who Has to Leave

More than half a million people from four countries were allowed to stay in the US for two years under what’s called “humanitarian parole.” This program has been around since the Cold War and was expanded by Biden because of dangerous conditions in these countries.

By November 2024, exactly 531,970 people had been given permission to stay through this program. The government says this has helped reduce illegal border crossings from these countries by 98%.

However, not everyone will have to leave immediately. Some of these immigrants may have gotten legal permission to stay through other visa programs, so the exact number who must leave is not clear yet.

Why This is Happening Now

The Trump administration strongly disagrees with Biden’s approach to immigration. A government spokesperson called the previous program “disastrous” and said it allowed fraud and crime while hurting American workers.

During the presidential campaign, Trump and his team criticized this program heavily. They focused mainly on cities like Springfield, Ohio, which saw many Haitian immigrants move there in recent years.

Trump made controversial claims about Haitian immigrants that were later proven false. His Vice President JD Vance admitted to “creating a story” to draw attention to immigration issues and what he called problems for American citizens.

What Does the Future Hold

President Trump canceled Biden’s immigration program with his own executive order right after taking office in January. The Supreme Court supported his decision to suspend the program in May, though legal fights continue in lower courts.

The government expects this new order to face some challenges in court from people who oppose Trump’s mass deportation plans. To encourage people to leave voluntarily, the Department of Homeland Security is offering help with travel costs and a $1000 “exit bonus” to migrants who don’t have any legal permission to stay in the US.

The immigrants who were protected under Biden’s program have US-based sponsors and went through background checks. But the new administration believes that the screening wasn’t good enough and wants them to leave the country immediately.
