Trump Tells Israel Not to Kill Iran’s Supreme Leader

President Trump stepped in to stop Israel from assassinating Iran’s top leader, as per three US officials who spoke to a news channel. The dramatic intervention shows just how close the Middle East came to an even bigger explosion of violence.

Trump apparently told Israeli Prime Minister Netanyahu that killing Ayatollah Ali Khamenei was “not a good idea” during a phone call after Israel started bombing Iran on Friday. The conversation happened as both countries were already trading massive attacks that have now stretched into their third day.

When the reporter asked Netanyahu about it during an interview, he wouldn’t give a straight answer. “There are so many false reports of conversations that never happened, and I’m not going into that,” he said. But he made it clear Israel will keep doing whatever it thinks is necessary.

The whole thing started when Israel hit Iranian nuclear sites and military targets on Friday. Since then, both sides have been launching bigger and bigger attacks. Iran fired missiles at Israeli cities while Israel kept pounding Iranian facilities. Now everyone’s wondering if Trump’s intervention will actually make any difference.

Netanyahu Dodges Questions About Assasination Plot

Netanyahu played it coy when pressed about whether Trump really blocked the assassination plan. He said that Israel focuses on “nuclear and military” targets rather than political leaders, but added a warning that people running Iran’s weapons programs shouldn’t feel safe.

“I don’t think anyone making decisions about those programs should be living free and easy,” an Israeli official told a news channel. That sounds like they’re still thinking about going after specific Iranian leaders, just maybe not the very top guy.

The Israeli prime minister kept his cards close to his chest during an interview. He said Israel will “do what we need to do,” and that America knows what is good for the United States. Meaning, Israel’s going to keep hitting Iran whether Trump likes all their targets or not.

Peace Talks Fall Apart as Fighting Continues

Trump’s trying to play peacemaker while also backing Israel. He posted on his social that Iran and Israel should make a deal and claimed he could get them to stop fighting just like it got India and Pakistan to calm down their recent tensions.

But any hope for quick diplomacy just crashed. Nuclear talks between the US and Iran that were supposed to happen on Sunday got cancelled. Iran told mediators from Qatar and Oman that they won’t negotiate while Israeli bombs are still falling on their country.

Before heading to the G7 summit in Canada, Trump told reporters the US will keep supporting Israel. He wouldn’t say if he had asked Netanyahu to stop the attacks, but he made his threat to Iran very clear. “If we are attacked in any way, shape or form by Iran, the full strength and might of the U.S Armed Forces will come down on you at levels never seen before,” Trump warns.
