Bitcoin is edging closer to an unprecedented milestone of $100,000 as pro-cryptocurrency optimism swells following Donald Trump's election as the next U.S. president. On Thursday, the world’s largest digital currency traded between $98,000 and $99,000 in late U.S. trading, briefly touching $99,073. This marks a surge of over 40% in just two weeks. The recent rally underscores the growing enthusiasm surrounding prospects for a more favourable regulatory environment under Trump for cryptocurrencies, including bitcoin.
The Trump Effect on Bitcoin's Surge
Trump’s presidency has been largely credited with reinvigorating confidence in the cryptocurrency landscape. His campaign promise to establish the United States as “the crypto capital of the planet” has been warmly embraced by digital asset investors. Additionally, Trump announced plans to create a national bitcoin stockpile, signalling his administration’s strong alignment with digital currency initiatives.
Trump’s stance has sparked expectations of regulatory easing, with many eyeing the replacement of current Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) Chair, Gary Gensler. Investors anticipate that the new leadership will align with Trump’s pro-crypto agenda and consult on policies conducive to innovation in blockchain technology and digital currencies.
The announcement of Trump’s own crypto business venture, World Liberty Financial, in September added further fuel to bitcoin's bullish trends. Although details about this enterprise remain limited, the move is seen as a declaration of his personal interest and commitment to the sector.
A Heavyweight Ally in Elon Musk
Adding intensity to the crypto rally is billionaire Elon Musk, a close Trump ally and a significant advocate for blockchain innovation. Musk's vocal support reinforces the narrative surrounding cryptocurrencies and their potential to disrupt traditional financial systems. From adopting bitcoin for Tesla transactions to his frequent tweets about cryptocurrency, Musk has propelled the movement into mainstream conversations everywhere, further inflating optimism for bitcoin and other digital assets.
Bitcoin Reaches Mainstream Viability
Over 16 years after its creation, bitcoin seems poised to achieve mainstream acceptance. It has weathered scepticism, regulatory hurdles, and scandals to become a staple in the financial landscape.
Alicia Kao, managing director at KuCoin, noted, “Everyone who’s bought bitcoin at any point in history is currently in profit. But those who bought it early...are the real winners. Not because they’re rich, but because they’re right.”
The recent resurgence of bitcoin, which had dipped below $16,000 in 2022, correlates with the approval of U.S.-listed bitcoin exchange-traded funds (ETFs) in January this year. Previously, the SEC had declined several bitcoin ETF applications due to investor protection concerns. The approval opened the doors to institutional investors and broadened the accessibility of bitcoin to novice investors, effectively boosting its value.
Crypto Rush and Increasing Investments
The election has also catalysed a larger "crypto rush" in financial markets. Investors have poured over $4 billion into U.S.-listed bitcoin ETFs since the election results were announced. Additionally, the launch of options for BlackRock’s ETF has displayed overwhelmingly positive market sentiment, reflected in the rising popularity of call options (bets on higher prices).
Joe McCann, CEO of Miami-based digital hedge fund Asymmetric, says, "There is a persistent bid in the market. Reaching $100,000 is inevitable."
Bitcoin’s rally has similarly lifted crypto-related stocks, with mining companies like MARA Holdings registering high gains amidst the price surge. John LaForge from Wells Fargo drew parallels between bitcoin's momentum and 1970s-era gold, suggesting that bitcoin has now entered "price discovery mode," a phase characterised by its potential to exceed assumed thresholds.
Challenges Looming Over the Cryptocurrency Sector
Despite the current optimism, bitcoin’s ascent doesn’t come without its share of challenges. Historical setbacks, such as the devastating collapse of the FTX exchange and the subsequent legal fallout with its founder, Sam Bankman-Fried, remain cautionary tales for investors.
Other enduring criticisms revolve around crypto's high energy demands, with mining operations often accused of burdening power grids and causing greenhouse gas emissions. The environmental impact of cryptocurrency mining continues to be a contentious subject in this sector’s growth narrative.
Crime and fraud also persist, threatening the industry’s credibility. According to Chainalysis, at least $24.2 billion worth of cryptocurrency was sent to illicit wallet addresses in the past year, including scams and funds linked to terrorism. Enhanced oversight and robust security protocols will be vital to quell such concerns as cryptocurrency marches towards broader acceptance.
Is Bitcoin's $100,000 Milestone the First of Many?
Bitcoin’s potential to surpass $100,000 will likely be seen as a landmark moment rather than a peak. The combination of mass institutional adoption, evolving legislation, and growing consumer interest sets the scene for ongoing price discovery.
For now, though, investors and crypto advocates alike celebrate bitcoin’s record-breaking rally. With Trump’s presidency, bitcoin not only inches closer to new milestones but also cements its role as a revolutionary force in the future of finance.
