OpenAI GPT-5. US approval wide rollout to start as the top U.S. government, Department of Commerce approved a broad public release under Washington’s frontier AI oversight framework following more US government testing. This is a departure from the previous staggered release of GPT-5. Only a small number of GPT-5 6 has access.
Government Approval Clears Wider Release
The GPT-5. National security fears that advanced AI systems could be exploited and this was the reason behind a delay. The wider deployment was approved by the Department of Commerce following further testing using the government’s updated AI oversight structure, reported Axios. In the prior system, some vetted partners were given limited access, part of which flowed through OpenAI’s sharing of details with U.S. officials.
The heightened scrutiny comes on the heels of an executive order issued by U.S. President Donald Trump establishing a voluntary framework that allows developers to submit frontier AI models for government review before being released into trusted hands for up to 30 days.
OpenAI Introduces Three New Models
Due to accessibility, OpenAI announced the launch of Version 5 Sol, Terra and Luna. Sol is the top-of-the-line model from the company, Terra comes in as their mid-tier lower-cost offering and Luna aims to be their cost-efficient value leader.
The introduction comes soon after the U.S. government gauged Anthropic having designed its Fable and Mythos models and reviewed them for national security concerns before approving those technologies.
The rollout drew no immediate comment from the White House or the Commerce Department at OpenAI. Previously, Anthropic warned that it could be completely impossible to prevent jailbreaks against its most sophisticated AI models which points to a long ongoing debate around the security of advanced AI and if those models should be granted government approval.
