Moonshot Debuts 2.8 Trillion-Parameter AI Model

Chinese artificial intelligence startup Moonshot launched a 2.8 trillion-parameter AI model, which the company said is the world's largest open-weight model.
Kimi K3 is designed to write code for software, reason logically and analyse long documents and is available for developers to download and tweak the model’s weight to their requirements.
The launch adds another blow to the global AI sector, which was already engaged in developing more big language models between the US and China. The open weight has become an essential part of AI, that allows enterprises to customize the systems on their own without relying on commercial close-end systems.
China's AI Developers Expand Open-Weight Models
Moonshot claims Kimi K3 has a 1 million token limit which means it can handle far more information compared to previously known AI models. The company also cited competitive coding and reasoning performance, and performance on AI agent benchmark tests compared to a few top proprietary systems.
In the past, various Chinese firms have been releasing open-weight models like DeepSeek, MiniMax and Z.ai, as China pours resources into foundation models. The United States is still at the forefront of building frontier AI systems, although China seems to have ramped up model development over the past year, according to Stanford University’s 2026 AI Index Report.
Growing Enterprise Interest in Open AI
Moonshot plans to raise approximately $2 billion more from investors at a valuation of around $30 billion. Alibaba and Tencent are among the company’s investors. The global AI industry, in general, is a booming sector.
Private companies created more than 90 per cent of the innovative frontier AI models in 2025, and demand for both AI infrastructure and enterprise software in North America, Europe, and Asia is continually growing, according to the 2026 AI Index Report.
With the availability of open-weight AI models, Australian and US enterprises have more choices to use when writing code, research, and for enterprise applications.
