Meta Launches Muse Code AI to Challenge OpenAI and Anthropic

Meta is rolling out a new coding assistant powered by the Muse Spark 1.2 model, and this latest version of the AI coding agent is going into beta as Meta continues to invest in AI tools for software development.

The release is part of a trend of increased competition in AI coding tools, as businesses increasingly turn to AI to assist software engineering, code reviews, and testing.

The coding agent can write, edit, debug, and verify code in the context of multiple AI agents working on large codebases, according to Meta. It also preserves the execution history, enabling developers to return to their tasks after a break without having to repeat already finished work.

The service can be used on a usage-based pricing model where US$1.25 is charged for every million input tokens and US$4.25 is charged for every million output tokens.

Meta Expands Enterprise AI Portfolio

The launch is one of the first key developer products to emerge from Meta Superintelligence Labs (MSIL), the AI arm of the company formed in 2026. Led by Scale AI's former chief executive, Alexandr Wang and AI leadership from Meta, the unit aims to develop advanced AI models and applications.

Meta said that it developed Meta Muse Code AI coding agent with Muse Spark 1.2 to help the two systems collaborate with each other on complex software projects. In July, the company previewed Muse Spark 1.1, before announcing the new model and coding agent.

It is a launch in time given that AI coding assistants are gaining greater traction in enterprise software development. Businesses such as OpenAI, Anthropic, Google and Microsoft have grown AI coding platforms in the last year, as demand for AI automation of programming grows among businesses looking to automate software testing and documentation.

AI Infrastructure Spending Accelerates 

Meta is also ramping up its investment in AI infrastructure along with product releases. The company earned a revenue of US$60.8 billion in its second quarter results of 2026, which grew 28% compared to the corresponding period of the previous year.

Meta also raised its forecast for capital spending in 2026 to US$130 billion to US$145 billion, due to increased investment in AI data centres, computing infrastructure and networking capacity.

AI software tools are also expected to grow, according to industry research. The global AI code tool market reached US$4.86 billion in 2025 and is expected to grow significantly as enterprises adopt AI code tools in enterprise settings.

Australian and U.S. companies are increasingly incorporating AI coding platforms into their technology investment plans, with organizations weighing security, cost, integration with existing development processes, and the performance of the AI models before implementing them.
