Qatar Aims to Become the Middle East's First Olympic Host, Creating History
Qatar has formally confirmed its bid to host the 2036 Olympic and Paralympic Games. This was announced by the Qatar Olympic Committee (QOC), which is currently in negotiation with the International Olympic Committee (IOC) during the host selection process. If it succeeds, Qatar will become the first nation in the Middle East and North African region to host the Olympics.
Qatar Prime Minister Sheikh Mohammed bin Abdulrahman Al-Thani described the step as historic. The nation's Olympic Committee, headed by Sheikh Joaan bin Hamad Al-Thani, believes this bid is part of a bigger national agenda. He explained that sport has now become an integral aspect of Qatar's identity and future plans.
Infrastructure Already Constructed Following World Cup Success
One of Qatar's biggest strengths is that 95% of the needed arenas and infrastructure are already established. This is due to the extensive investments for the 2022 FIFA World Cup that filled the nation with stadiums, transport, and so on. According to officials, this makes Qatar well-set for success, particularly since the IOC now seeks host cities with already established facilities.
Apart from the World Cup, Qatar also hosted or is hosting a host of top sporting events such as the 2019 World Athletics Championships, the 2027 FIBA Basketball World Cup, and the 2030 Asian Games.
Fierce Competition from Across the Globe
Qatar is the latest to join a long list of nations to bid for the 2036 Games. India, Indonesia, Turkey, and Chile have already confirmed participation. Other contenders such as Germany, Saudi Arabia, and South Korea are also keen.
The ultimate choice will be left to the newly elected IOC President, Kirsty Coventry. The first female head of the IOC, she will preside over this significant selection. Since the previous three Olympics were awarded to cities in Europe, North America, and Oceania, Qatar believes its siting in Asia provides it with leverage in the rotation.
If chosen, Qatar would keep developing its status as a sports capital of the world—now, at the Olympic level.
