Beyond its industry-focused work, FPA Australia is deeply committed to community outreach and education. The association organises public awareness campaigns, workshops, and seminars aimed at educating the general public about fire safety and prevention measures. These initiatives help build a culture of safety and preparedness within communities, reducing the likelihood of fire-related incidents and enhancing overall public safety. This means members have access to valuable services, events, and vital information, keeping them well-informed and capable of delivering top-notch fire protection solutions.

The Importance of Mentorship

One of the most compelling points Collie makes is that effective mentorship isn’t about handing out answers; it’s about developing the mentee’s problem-solving skills. He believes that by prompting mentees with probing questions, mentors can help them think critically and come up with lasting solutions. This approach not only fosters a deeper understanding but also instils a sense of ownership and confidence in the mentee.

Collie’s method of mentorship aims to cultivate independence and resilience in mentees. By encouraging critical thinking and self-navigation through challenges, this style of mentorship benefits not only the individual but also enhances team dynamics and organisational effectiveness.

What sets Collie apart is his genuine care for the personal and professional growth of his mentees. He emphasises that mentorship should be more about guiding, supporting, and inspiring rather than providing prescriptive advice. This nurturing approach helps build lasting relationships that go beyond just the workplace, creating a more profound impact on the mentee’s life.

Building Trust and Rapport

Another critical theme in John Collie’s interview is the importance of building trust and rapport in mentor-mentee relationships. Collie underscores the necessity of mutual respect and compatibility as the foundation for these connections, emphasising that trust develops over time through consistent, honest interactions.

Collie shares a personal experience where his mentor pointed out an area for improvement, doing so from a place of genuine concern. This candid feedback was pivotal for Collie, helping him see the value of being open to criticism. The mentor’s ability to deliver tough feedback while maintaining respect and support was crucial in fostering a productive and trusting relationship.

Building trust and rapport requires a delicate balance of empathy and assertiveness. For mentorship to be effective, both parties need to feel comfortable enough to engage in open, honest dialogues. This involves creating a safe space where mentees can express vulnerabilities and uncertainties without fear of judgement. On the other hand, mentors must be willing to share their experiences and insights candidly, even if the truth is uncomfortable. This mutual transparency strengthens the bond, ensuring that the relationship is both constructive and enduring.

Leadership and Team Dynamics

John Collie’s leadership style is heavily influenced by his background in team sports. Throughout the interview, he draws parallels between his experiences in sports and his professional life, emphasising the importance of teamwork and collaboration. He explains that his preference has always been for team environments over individual pursuits and believes this has translated well into his business career.

Collie’s competitive nature and passion for teamwork are central to his approach to leadership. He believes that the best leaders are those who can unite their teams around common goals and inspire collective effort. This involves recognising and leveraging each team member’s strengths, fostering a sense of shared purpose, and celebrating team successes. Collie’s ability to galvanise teams and drive collective achievement has been a significant factor in his career success.

Furthermore, Collie’s leadership extends beyond merely managing tasks and projects; it involves nurturing a positive and inclusive team culture. He understands that a cohesive team is built on trust, mutual respect, and open communication. By creating an environment where team members feel valued and supported, Collie ensures that his teams remain motivated and engaged. This holistic approach to leadership not only enhances team performance but also contributes to long-term organisational success.

Open-Mindedness and Continuous Improvement

Open-mindedness is a recurring theme in John Collie’s narrative. He emphasises the necessity of being receptive to feedback and willing to make adjustments. Collie shares how his ability to accept and act on criticism has been instrumental in his professional development. He acknowledges that growth often requires stepping outside one’s comfort zone and embracing new perspectives. This openness to change allows for continuous improvement and innovation, ensuring that he remains adaptable and forward-thinking in his approach.

In addition to being open-minded, Collie underscores the importance of a growth mindset. He views challenges and setbacks as opportunities for learning and development rather than obstacles to be feared. This mindset enables him to approach problems with curiosity and resilience, constantly seeking ways to enhance his skills and knowledge. By fostering a culture of continuous improvement, Collie not only drives his own success but also inspires those around him to strive for excellence.

Career Highlights and Future Aspirations

John Collie did not set out to be a CEO. Starting his career as a carpenter, he assumed his career would be in building.

A medical emergency (not his) prompted him to seek a ‘temporary’ role at CSR Ltd – more than a decade later, he was still there, having progressed rapidly through the organisation, moving through roles in different departments including production, sales, general management, and acquisitions & mergers.

However, after 15 years with CSR he wanted a change, and moved into adjacent industries-decorative products, civil infrastructure and contracting-until finally stepping into a senior leadership role with Daikin, across its airconditioning and fire businesses.

At that point he decided to take a one-year career break, which was interrupted five months in when FPA Australia knocked on his door.

Despite some initial hestitation, he became energised by the association, its people and the fire protection industry.

As he looks to the future, Collie expresses a desire to continue leading teams, whether as a CEO or in another leadership role. His passion for fire protection and team dynamics remains a driving force in his career ambitions. While he contemplates the possibility of owning his own company, his primary focus is on creating value through effective leadership and meaningful contributions to his field.

Collie’s future aspirations reflect his commitment to personal and professional growth. He envisions a career that allows him to leverage his expertise and experience to make a positive impact. Whether leading major projects, mentoring future leaders, or driving organisational success, Collie remains dedicated to excellence in fire protection. His journey serves as an inspiration for aspiring leaders, illustrating the power of perseverance, open-mindedness, and a collaborative spirit.
