EU consumer groups file complaints on Big Tech business
Consumer organisations across Europe filed official complaints against Google, Meta Platforms and TikTok on Thursday, claiming the companies did not do enough to restrict users from being defrauded online. The European Consumer Organisation and 29 member organisations in 27 EU countries filed the complaints under the Digital Services Act (DSA), a new pan-EU law on large tech platforms. The legislation imposes more extensive obligations on major online platforms to eliminate unlawful and abusive content from their services.
Scam Advertisements Weren’t Removed Properly, Consumer Groups Say
Between December last year and March this year, the consumer rights groups said they reported close to 900 ads that could breach EU laws. The platforms only removed 27% of scam ads that were reported, while nearly half (52%) were ignored or rejected. BEUC Director General Agustín Reyna stated that the companies had not taken enough steps to detect and remove fraudulent financial promotions, instead exposing millions of users to scams, with significant loss of savings.
Regulators Could Investigate These Major Penalties
All of these complaints are part of a growing push to strengthen protections for users who may encounter harmful material, scams and at-risk users or accounts on major technology firms. Consumer groups have called on the European Commission and national regulators to decide if there were Digital Services Act breaches, and penalise those companies accordingly.
