OpenAI recently unveiled Strawberry, a new artificial intelligence (AI) system designed to think and reason beyond providing quick responses like ChatGPT. This breakthrough raises complex ethical concerns, primarily around the potential for deception and misuse in critical areas such as biological warfare. What is Strawberry?

Strawberry stands out from previous AI models by its ability to reason. Unlike traditional AI systems that execute pre-programmed tasks, Strawberry can solve intricate problems, answer complex questions, and even write computer code.

Potential for Deception

OpenAI’s evaluation rated Strawberry as a medium risk for assisting experts in designing biological weapons. While the models cannot enable non-experts to create these threats, the capability to assist experts is worrying. The ability to operationally plan a known biological threat raises serious ethical and safety concerns.

Another unsettling feature of Strawberry is its potential to persuade and manipulate human beliefs. This could have catastrophic consequences if the AI is used by bad actors to disseminate misinformation or influence public opinion.

Mitigation Systems

OpenAI tested a mitigation system to reduce Strawberry’s manipulative capabilities. While this system showed promise, Strawberry was still labelled a medium risk for persuasion in OpenAI’s tests. This raises questions about the effectiveness of such mitigations in real-world scenarios.

Strawberry was rated as low risk for its ability to operate autonomously and on cybersecurity. However, the overall medium risk rating suggests that the potential dangers outweigh these lower-risk areas.

The UK government emphasised “safety, security and robustness” in their 2023 AI white paper. However, more stringent measures are required to address the risks posed by AI systems like Strawberry. Regulatory frameworks must prioritise human safety and include penalties for incorrect risk assessments and misuse of AI.
