BlueScope Steel is looking at a $13.2 billion takeover offer from a consortium led by SGH, Kerry Stokes’s company, and the American giant Steel Dynamics. BlueScope’s stock jumped to a 17-year high on Tuesday after the $30-per-share cash bid. SGH was also working with BlueScope and Steel Dynamics on a deal that would have involved a takeover of its Australian and Asian assets but not its North American division, which last year reported earnings before interest, tax, amortisation and depreciation of $US590m. It is the fourth attempt by the US partner to take control of BlueScope’s American business in two years.

Bondi Attack: Australian PM Open To National Inquiry

Prime Minister Anthony Albanese has toned down his rhetoric on a national royal commission into the Bondi Beach terrorist act. With pressure mounting from former Labour MPs, respected names in business and the Jewish community, the Prime Minister added he is “looking at everything necessary” to maintain national security and social harmony. His immediate priority continues to be the Richardson security review and emergency hate speech legislation, but there are clear indications from his recent rhetoric that a federal inquiry is no longer off the table as New Zealand clamours for answers on the December atrocity.

Australian Cities - Australian cities face LA-style bushfire risk as climate change fuels extreme fire seasons, a new report warns.

Report Reveals Australian Cities Face LA-Style Bushfire Threat

About 7 million Australians living on the outskirts of major cities could face wildfire conditions similar to those seen in Los Angeles, where fires have killed 31 people and destroyed thousands of homes, according to a report by former fire chiefs. Climate change driven by emissions is intensifying extreme fire conditions, while rapid swings between floods and drought allow vegetation to grow quickly before drying out, with strong, dry winds similar to California’s Santa Ana winds fanning flames. Cities including Sydney, Melbourne, Canberra, Perth and Darwin are considered particularly vulnerable. The report says deep cuts to emissions, stronger planning in fire-prone suburbs and greater funding for fire and emergency services are urgently needed.

“Not For Sale”: Greenland Defies Trump’s Annexation Dreams

A global controversy has been rekindled by President Donald Trump after stating again that he wants to buy Greenland for U.S. national security. Against the background of the U.S. military executing new orders in Venezuela, Trump has indicated that Denmark is unable to ensure the defence of its Arctic territory from Russia and China. Officials in Denmark and Greenland have adamantly rejected the notion as a violation of international law, branding it a “fantasy.” Backed by the U.K. and the EU, Denmark is calling on the U.S. to end its threats and respect the territorial integrity of allies.

145 Nations Agree To Trump’s New Global Tax Deal

More than 145 countries have struck a milestone agreement to narrow the 2021 global minimum tax deal in concessions to U.S. worries. The new “side-by-side” system will ensure that U.S. multinational firms do not face additional taxation from a foreign country, as long as the companies meet American tax standards. The settlement, completed in Paris, settles a long-running fight with the Trump administration and halts a potential tit-for-tat of “revenge taxes.” The move would protect the global tax floor of 15% while providing American corporations with badly needed legal certainty.
