Strong 6.2-Magnitude Earthquake Shakes Western Japan
A magnitude 6.2 earthquake struck eastern Shimane in western Japan at 10:18 am on Tuesday, with a shallow depth of around 10 kilometres. The Japan Meteorological Agency reported an upper-5 intensity in Matsue, Yasugi and Sakaiminato, where movement was difficult, and furniture toppled. At least twelve aftershocks followed, including one measuring magnitude 5.1. Shinkansen services between Shin-Osaka and Hakata were temporarily suspended but resumed by 1 pm. Authorities said there was no tsunami risk and no impact on nuclear facilities. Public broadcaster NHK reported that four people were hospitalised and some buildings were damaged.
